The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) and the State Electoral Commission (SEC) of Montenegro will organize a context overview workshop on Mapping Electoral Risks in Montenegro on 12-13 December 2022. The event will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders with expertise in elections and risk management to assess electoral risks in upcoming elections in the country.
Luxembourg has selected gender and democracy as a thematic priority during its Chairship of International IDEA’s Council of Member States in 2024.

With nearly 2 billion voters expected to head to the polls, 2024 has been dubbed a ‘super election year’. In fact, over the next 12 months, more than 70 countries will head to a presidential, legislative, or subnational election. Among them are seven out of ten of the world’s most populous countries, including India, the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Russia, and Mexico. Similarly, in South Asia, five out of its eight countries have held/are also planning to hold elections in 2024.
At the Council of Member States meeting convened on 1 December 2023 at International IDEA’s Headquarters in Stockholm, the Netherlands, represented by Ambassador Bengt van Loosdrecht, handed over the Chairship of International IDEA to Luxembourg, represented by Ambassador Henri Schumacher. The transition in the Institute’s leadership also saw the appointment of Norway as Vice Chair.
On 4-5 July, 2023, in Tirana, Albania, International IDEA in cooperation with Rule of Law Centre of Finland and Center Election Commission of Albania hosted the regional roundtable on "Interinstitutional Cooperation on Digitalization of Electoral Processes and Cybersecurity in the Western Balkans".
International IDEA held an online panel discussion on the latest Global State of Democracy (GSoD) Indices findings on the six countries in the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia) on 10 February 2023.
