The New Checks and Balances
Democracies across the world – from established to emerging – are facing a new challenge in the rise of online campaigning, and the way in which political actors increasingly spend money in this space. Online campaigning often operates in a space where rules are unclear, malign actors thrive, and regulators struggle to keep up with the rapidly changing digital landscape.
From the climate emergency to conflict and widespread human rights violations, continued food and energy insecurity, increasing division and political polarization, and a growing disillusionment with institutions to deliver on promises made in 2015, we are in the midst of intersecting and often overwhelming crises. However, solutions do exist and champions for them persist.
