Join the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) for the online launch of the Report "Democractic Engagement after Two Summits for Democracy - Reviewing the Impact and Providing some Reflections for the Future", which will take place on Wednesday July 5th, 3.00-4.30 pm CET/9.00-10.30 am EST.
On April 15th, 2023, tensions between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) turned into fighting, escalating into a severe armed conflict that has engulfed the country in what risks turning into a large-scale civil war. The warring factions took power together through a military coup on October 25th, 2021, which upended a fragile democratic transition that started after the removal of long-time ruler Omar Al-Bashir.
In 2022, the Collins Dictionary selected “Permacrisis” as the word of the year for 2022. Permacrisis describes “an extended period of instability and insecurity”, highlighting that the world faces – and will continue to face- multiple crises: from pandemics to conflict.
Gender equality is an integral part of thriving democracies, but few think of it as a prerequisite for democracy. At the same time, democracy is being undermined by the same forces that are pushing back on women’s rights, participation, and representation in public life. This event contributes and sustains the efforts to sustain gender equality on the global agenda for democracy.

The prioritisation of technology in enhancing gender equality is enshrined in Sustainable Development Goal 5. Although digital technologies are regarded as a tool to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment global data shows there are glaring disparities in access, use, affordability, knowledge and more.

The SDG16 Data Initiative Report, jointly produced by the SDG16 Data Initiative consortium, aims to evaluate global progress towards realizing Sustainable Development Goal 16—Promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development—presenting the latest evidence.
The first Summit for Democracy, held in December 2021, brought together leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector to set out an affirmative agenda for democratic renewal. Between the first and second Summit, the ‘Year of Action’ is an opportunity for governments to begin to implement their commitments to democracy made during the first Summit, with the help of civil society and democracy support organisations.

Women in politics face biased, sexist, and discriminatory media treatment. When reporters cover women leaders, they often use terms that emphasize women's traditional roles and focus on their appearance. They perpetuate stereotypes of women politicians as weak, indecisive, and emotional.
In September 2015, leaders of the world called for a ‘new chapter’ in global development to be achieved by 2030 through 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Today, we are close to the halfway point and many challenges remain so no one is ‘left behind'. One key condition for achieving sustainable development and all SDGs consists in promoting just, peaceful, and inclusive societies (SDG 16).
After 40 years of uneven experience, democracy is facing acute challenges in Latin America. The region’s undeniable success in establishing credible electoral processes and in advancing human development levels, has not been replicated in other crucial aspects of the democratic project, such as the rule of law, the workings of representative institutions, and the emergence of peaceful and cohesive societies.
